Fifth Wall

Fifth Wall is a theater company founded with the goal of global collaboration, performing in different languages and styles in order to foster a new relationship with our audience. The fifth wall invokes the audience not only as spectator, but as the integral creative element within the work, and therefore essential to the creative process.

We plan on doing this by keeping true to the ideas latent even in the earliest Greek theatre: to intensify an art form that raises urgent questions to society without being dogmatic, weaving together story and myth not as absolutes, but as part of an ongoing conversation.

Our tools are simple, direct and without superfluous devices. Our tools are drawn first from reality: then reused, recycled and re-imagined in order to redefine the architecture and borders of theatre itself.

This company originated with the production of 39 Defaults, a work that brought all these concepts first to light. The piece came from our conversations about the new revolutionary movements sweeping the planet, from the Arab Spring, to the camp-outs in Spain all the way to an occupied Wall Street – revolutionary movements that are still alive and growing right at the moment of this piece’s premiere June 2012 at Teatro Stage Fest, a celebrated New York theatre, dance and music festival. It played to a full house each show and is now returning, November 11th till December 2nd.
